Chapter 9
The morning after the kayak adventure, Adam and David were having a late breakfast when Admiral Tom knocked on the door of the cottage and came in. âHello, you two. I hear you had a bit of excitement yesterday.â
âHow on earth do you know about that?â said Adam as he pulled up a chair for Tom to join them at the table.
âBen Lewis phoned Jasmine last night and she told me about your drug discoveries when she came to work this morning. Sheâs still in my cottage and pretty worried about this chap Frank Green and how it might affect Jack in prison.â
âOh heck, I hadnât really thought about that,â said David. âLook, I need to go and see her right now. Tom, is that OK with you? Perhaps you could stay here and talk it through with Adam.â David got up and, without waiting for Tom to reply, went next door.
They sat at the table for some time before the Admiral spoke. âThings seem to be hotting up, Adam. The regatta and the Holberton party are over and now the whole drugs business is raising its head, and I hear the eco park planning application will be heard at the beginning of next month. I must say that since you arrived at Eastside, life certainly hasnât been dull. Donât get me wrong, Iâve very much enjoyed having both you and David next door. Weâve had some good evenings together and Iâd miss you if you left. But to be honest, I am worried for Jasmine. I really do like her and her family and I just donât want things to go wrong for them again.â
âYouâre right, Tom, and Iâve been affected by the lifeboat fatality in which I was involved. I had a sleepless night worrying about a whole range of things, not least as to whether Iâd made a sensible decision to come here in the first place. You see, I have made new friends, such as yourself, but Iâve also got sucked into a whole range of other peoplesâ lives. Itâs been exciting but a bit scary. Before I came to Daymouth, all I was thinking about was trading. I was successful and it totally occupied my mind. Since Iâve been here, my involvement in the lives of others has multiplied and the complexity of the whole thing has increased. Maybe Iâve gone backwards in coming here?â
âAdam, for me, itâs Jasmine Iâm worried about. Youâre a bright chap with everything going for you. You still have a lot of life in front of you and there are many good people living in Daymouth. Frank Green and his cronies are clearly rotten apples and you might add Lord Robert Harvey to that list. Remember, we live in an area that most Brits would call paradise and youâve got the finances to enjoy a lifestyle of your own choosing. My suggestion to you is just keep going and enjoy the good bits and sort out the challenges.â
Meanwhile, next door, David was trying to console Jasmine.
